Protein is an essential macronutrient. The other macronutrients are fats and carbohydrates. Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids. When we consume protein, our bodies break down this protein into amino acids to be repurposed into specific proteins for our bodies to use. These amino acids help our bodies to heal and grow. Protein can be found throughout the body, in our muscle, bone, skin, and hair.
Foods with lots of protein include:
- Meats e.g. chicken, pork, beef, and lamb.
- Fish and seafood.
- Eggs and dairy inc. milk, cheese, and yoghurt.
- Pulses, beans, and grains.
- Nuts e.g. almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts.
